A Week of Electrical Expertise: Tackling EV Charger Setups, Consumer Unit Upgrades, and Everything in Between for Homes and Businesses.
This week has been a whirlwind of electrical projects at Solid Electrics Limited. From detailed EV charger installations to consumer unit upgrades, we’ve been hard at work ensuring safety, quality, and customer satisfaction at every step. Here’s a breakdown of how the week unfolded, highlighting our expertise and our clients' diverse needs.
Monday: Wiring for Saunas and Ice Taps
We started the week with a customer who needed wiring prepared for installing a sauna and ice tap, complete with cold recovery functionality. The job involved running an armoured cable from the existing consumer unit to the sauna location and installing an external consumer unit to power outdoor sockets. This task took most of the day as we carefully prepped for the final installation of the sauna.
Afterwards, we visited another client to provide a quote for an EV charging point and consumer unit upgrade. The detailed quote included upgrading the consumer unit, running cables throughout the property, wiring the EV charger, commissioning it, and preparing all the required certificates and reports. The quote was delivered to the customer by the end of the day.
Tuesday: EV Chargers and University Work
Tuesday brought more EV charger work, including another quote for a customer interested in connecting an EV charger. We proposed installing terminal blocks and using AV Ultra cable to the charging point, along with an external consumer unit. We recommended the BG-SYNC smart EV charger, ensuring the customer understood the system, including all the required paperwork and certifications.
Later in the day, we collaborated with property managers at Southampton University, where we worked on remedial tasks and conducted an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) for an HMO property. Our final job of the day involved a quote visit for a bathroom heater and external lighting adjacent to the building.
Wednesday: Residential and Commercial Projects
Wednesday began with a quote visit that included a range of residential jobs, such as bulkhead installations in bathrooms and outside the house, PIR motion sensor installations, downlights, and floodlights for the garden and walkway. We ensured the customer received a detailed quote by the end of the day.
The rest of the day was spent working for a commercial property client in Portsmouth. The job involved replacing an LED driver and a PIR sensor for lights and addressing minor issues reported by their in-house engineer.
Thursday: Industrial Units and Residential Jobs
Thursday began with a quote visit to an industrial unit. The customer had recently purchased the property and was looking to improve the layout for employee well-being. The project involved installing a new consumer unit, running lighting circuits, and setting up dedicated circuits for machinery. This was planned as a three-day project with all materials outlined in the quote.
After completing the quote, we handled smaller residential jobs, including installing a bulkhead light in a kitchen and replacing a pendant. We also visited another customer who was experiencing tripping sockets in their kitchen. Upon inspection, we found they overloaded the circuit using multiple large appliances on a single cooker socket. We provided guidance on better managing their appliances to prevent further issues.
The day concluded with an EV charger installation for a pre-approved quote. We installed an untethered Hive EV charger and added an additional consumer unit next to the existing one. The customer, who had taken advantage of a British Gas promotion, was delighted with the setup despite minor troubleshooting during installation.
Friday: Tailored EV Charger Installation
Friday’s EV charger installation was for a customer who, after discussing their usage plans for their new electric Audi, decided that the British Gas promotion offering a year of free charging wasn’t suitable for their needs. The promotion wouldn't provide much value since they mainly intended to use the car for short trips.
Instead, they opted for an Ohme ePod charge point. We installed it discreetly, hiding it in a way that didn’t obstruct the front of the building but still provided the whole usability. The charger was neatly positioned to maintain the property's aesthetic while ensuring it was functional and accessible. The customer was thrilled with the result, as the installation met both their practical and design preferences.
In addition to our electrical work, we ensure that our fleet vehicles are in top condition. Planned maintenance is a priority for us to ensure we can consistently serve our clients without disruption. We took one of our vehicles for wheel alignment on Friday at Lee’s Trade Tyres. This helps us maintain safety and efficiency on the road, ensuring our team reaches every job reliably and on time.
The rest of Friday was spent finalizing paperwork, completing certificates, sending invoices, and submitting reports to the DNO and building control, ensuring all necessary installations complied with regulations.
